With the talented assistance of Tony Alcantara, Spring Sing offers these resources for learning or re-learning our unofficial theme song, “I Found Love.”
Back in the early ’60’s, Alison Geist, daughter of Grunyon Woody Geist, discovered this gem recorded by The Free Design. Wally Collins got a hold of it and did the arrangement that we all sing today.
“I Found Love” was first performed by The Grunyons at Spring Sing 12 in 1969, hosted by the Off Sounders in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Recording of Wally Collins directing the Spring Sing family in Alexander Hall, Princeton University, at Spring Sing 24 in 1981, following the announcement of the engagement of Bill Howard of the Augmented 8 to Libby Geist, daughter of Woody Geist (Grunyons). This was in fact the first intergroup marriage to come out of the Spring Sing family.
First sung at Spring Sing in 1969 by The Grunyons in Greenwich (hosted by the Off Sounders)
Arrangement by Walter S. Collins
Original words and music by Chris Dedrick, The Free Design
I found love, didn’t even know I needed it
But I found love, never even crossed my mind
I found love, had a garden never weeded it
But I found love, took an apple just in time
I found love in the fall and it did not hurt at all
I found sunlight and flowers, soft summer showers
I can feel my heart touch my Adams apple
I can feel the feather in my head
There is a lightness, politeness, fingers tingle, tootsies tap
’til dawn comes and finds me never in my bed
I found love, didn’t even know I needed it
But I found love, never even crossed my mind
I found love in the spring and I did not lose a thing
I found love in the fall and it did not hurt at all
I found sunlight and flowers, soft summer showers.
I can feel my heart touch my Adams apple
I can feel [a] feather in my head
There is a lightness, politeness, fingers tingle, tootsies tap
‘til dawn comes and finds me never in my bed
Had a garden never weeded it
But I found love
Took an apple just in time
I found love in this world and my heart strings just unfurled
I found love in the spring and I did not lose a thing
I found love in the fall and it did not hurt at all
I found love, I found love, I found love!
